ALL THE WOMEN YOU’VE NEVER HEARD OF
In consideration of Art History class when half the class was women, but there were zero women mentioned in the History of Art. When author Janson was asked why by a male colleague, his response was said to be, “Why bother?”
A media installation accompanies the images, with stats on the discrepancies that exist in gallery showings, academic salaries and tenure, and opportunities that currently exist as the byproduct of history made and taught through generations by privileged white men.
Questioning what was recorded, I’m compelled to look deeper for those left out of those pages for reasons of gender, race, age, orientation, and/or economic status. We can create a deeper and more complete expression of the human experience.
Belding uses collage to bring pieces together, playfully or ironically to stir the long-simmering pot. For your consideration.
